I Drew Soccer Players and Knit a Bunch of Sweaters

One of my main gigs during the Covid Years was illustrations for the social media accounts of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns soccer clubs: subjects ranged from dunking on rival teams, to photo-realistic portraits of players in their new kits, to PSAs about social distancing.

And in my me time, I knit sweaters. A lot of sweaters.

BANANA SUNDAY back in print! IN COLOR!

BANANA_SUNDAY_COLOR_COVER_WEB

New cover by Colleen Coover!

Paul Tobin and I are super excited to announce that Banana Sunday will be available again from its original publisher, Oni Press, on October 24, 2018! Originally released in 2006, the new edition has been remastered with spectacular colors by Rian Sygh, and it has been revised and edited for today’s readers! Also, we’ve changed the writer’s credit to Paul Tobin‘s name, rather than the pseudonym Root Nibot.

Banana Sunday is a comedy for readers of all ages that explores the themes of alienation, self-doubt, and the power of friendship. You know, high school. Banana Sunday was listed as one of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Great Graphic Novels for Teens for 2007.

We welcome this opportunity to share our early all-ages work with a new audience of readers, young and old!

“Kirby Steinberg is having a bit of trouble fitting into her new school. Sure, there’s the usual problems associated with being from “somewhere else,” but this time the new kid also happens to be the guardian for three talking primates. Chuck, the professorial orangutan. Knobby, the love-stricken spider monkey. Go-Go, the befuddled golden gorilla. These primates have learned to speak, thanks to the scientific processes of Kirby’s father. Or have they? What’s their real story? That’s what Nickels—Kirby’s new best friend and unfortunately dedicated school reporter—would like to discover. Can Kirby find time to develop a relationship with Martin, the dashing nerd? Steer clear of Skye, the high school’s #1 pillar of arrogance? Keep Knobby, Chuck and Go-Go from causing untold catastrophes? And, above all, will Kirby be able to hide the real origin of these three simians from Nickels? Oh, probably not.”

Short Comic “Rose’s Heart” Available Again!

Original Format

My 2012 homage to the horror tales of the comics of the 1970’s, “Rose’s Heart”, is back online! I’ve reformatted the 8-page comic into 3 parts and uploaded it to the comics app Webtoons.

Webtoons Scrolling Format

The scrolling format of Webtoons was totally new to me, so the reformatting process was a challenge I really dug! The app is free to all readers, so don’t hesitate to download it to your phone or mobile device (and then search for “Colleen Coover” to find my story). There’s some really good stuff on there!

But that’s not all the news for “Rose’s Heart”! It has just been added to the freshly Kickstarter funded anthology Gothic Tales Of Haunted Love from Bedside Press!

Gothic Tales Of Haunted Love from Bedside Press. Cover art by Leslie Doyle

A modern re-imagining of this genre, the stories feature a diverse range of heroes and villains from some of comics finest talent, and will likely feature a few stories of a woman in a white dress running away from a scary house.

Gothic Tales Of Haunted Love is expected out in 2018!

BANDETTE Receives A THIRD Eisner Award!!!

It is our profound pleasure to announce that Bandette has been chosen Best Digital Comic in the 2017 Eisner Awards!

This is the third time Bandette has been so honored (previous years: 2013, 2016) and we could not be more proud. We thank our digital publishing company, Monkeybrain Comics, and our digital distributor, Comixology, for providing us with the platform to create the best comic we can make. We also thank Dark Horse Comics for producing beautiful hardcover print editions of Bandette.

Finally, we thank the brilliant artists who have contributed their work to the Urchin Stories series of 2-3 page backup comics, featuring the many secondary characters who populate Bandette’s world! These stories help flesh out Bandette’s friends, rivals, and enemies, and they are being posted on a weekly basis (until we run out) at Bandette.Net. Anyone wanting a taste of Bandette should navigate there immediately!

Digital issues of Bandette are available through the cross-platform Comixology app for 99¢ each!

The Dark Horse print editions are available from comic shops everywhere in the United States and Canada, as well as from your favorite online book vendors.

Bandette is available in Spanish from Aleta, and in French from Groupe Paquet.

Bandette_theatre_HeadWe’re kicking off with “Theft At The Theatre!”: which is not technically an Urchin Story. The 8-page excerpt by Paul and me from Bandette #10 appeared first in Dark Horse Comic’s All Ages 2015 Free Comic Book Day offering. While the excerpt stands alone, it also serves as the first 8 pages of the Bandette story arc “The House Of The Green Mask”, reprinted in the hardcover Bandette Volume 3.

Playing around with Rebelle

Goofing around with a new software application. This drawing was created with Rebelle, which simulates wet and dry media, particularly watercolor, to astonishingly lifelike effect. It’s not perfect; I haven’t found if there’s a pressure sensitive brush stroke yet, and the dry media lines have a little more jitter than I’d like. But BOY, it’s cool, and I could see using it to color something in the future.
