Archie Comics has released some of the variant cover art from the upcoming Josie And The Pussycats #1, including this one by me! Here’s a quick GIF that shows some of the layers of design that evolved into the final piece.
Josie & the Pussycats #1 – On Sale Date: 9/28 – 32-page, full color comic – $3.99 U.S.
A couple of panels from Bandette 14! Here I’m refining my rough layouts into finished “pencils” that I will later print onto physical paper and redraw in ink wash. Notice that I use the software to flip the art a lot, so my eye can better see when the characters’ features are asymmetrical.

Archie Comics’ new Betty & Veronica series ships July 20, with a choice of 25 variant covers, including this one by me! (I think the order date for this title is coming up, so ask your retailer to order you a copy ASAP if you want to be sure to get one in July.)
I didn’t capture a video of the making of this cover, but I was able to put together a process GIF to show off some of the layers of work that went into this piece.
Some of the coloring was done in Photoshop, but the lion’s share of the work in this cover was in Manga Studio 5EX (now called Clip Studio Paint).
Trying to work out this guy’s look. My first go was too young, too handsome, and had too many facial features in common with another tough guy character in Bandette. Second try was much better!
Another new character to be introduced in Bandette 14. I decided mid-way through her hairstyle was too similar to that of another character from earlier issues.
Clip Studio Paint (formerly called Manga Studio 5EX–I’m trying to remember to change the name!)
Working out the look of one of several new characters to be introduced in Bandette 14.
Manga Studio 5EX (now called Clip Studio Paint).
Bandette 13 will be available digitally on ComiXology in mid-May!
A 5 min. video capture clip of me painting the Green Mask part of the new cover in Manga Studio 5EX (now called Clip Studio Paint). Bandette 13 will be available digitally on ComiXology in mid-May.
A short video capture clip of me painting part of the new cover in Manga Studio 5EX (now called Clip Studio Paint). Not the final version of the cover–I decided not to leave Bandette’s face blue! But I didn’t get a video of all the fiddling and noodling I did after this, boo. Bandette 13 will be available digitally on ComiXology in mid-May.
Preliminary layouts for the cover of Bandette #13, done in Manga Studio 5EX (now called Clip Studio Paint). I start out with the logo and subtitle and a very rudimentary sketch and take it from there. The mask was drawn with the aid of Manga Studio’s Symmetrical ruler–very handy for designing such objects!
